Not all hearing loss is the same;

Diagnosis and management will depend on the type of hearing loss you have. Hearing loss may occur suddenly or slowly progress over time. It can affect one or both ears and the early signs can be vastly different in adults and children. Hearing loss occurs when there is a problem with how sounds travel through the ear or are processed by the brain. Hearing loss can be split into different types, depending on where in the ear, or the hearing pathway, the problem occurs.

Conductive Hearing Loss

Conductive Hearing Loss occurs when there are problems with the outer and/or middle ear. Such problems will prevent the entire sound signal from reaching the inner ear. The most common causes of a conductive hearing loss are fluid in the middle ear (ear infection), a perforated eardrum, wax (cerumen) build up or damage to the tiny bones in the middle ear (ossicles).

Sensorineur al Hearing Loss

This is the most common type of hearing loss, and results from damage to the hair cells in the inner ear, or damage to the fibres of the auditory nerve. The most common causes of sensorineural hearing loss are age, genetics and noise exposure.  Sensorineura l hearing loss is commonly addressed with hearing devices; however, other options, such as cochlear implants may be recommende d depending on your hearing loss and listening goals.

Mixed Hearing Loss

An example of this may be a person who has worked in a loud factory for years (sensorineur al hearing loss), but who also has an ear infection (conductive hearing loss). Sometimes, the conductive component of the hearing loss can be medically treated and resolved, while the remaining sensorineural portion of the hearing loss is managed with hearing devices.
