What causes ear wax build-up?

Your ears are naturally ‘self-cleaning’, with wax slowly moving out of the ear canal on its own. It typically only becomes a problem when this process is disrupted and wax builds up, leading to blockage and hearing changes.

Narrow or curved ear canals

Some ear shapes make it harder for wax to naturally migrate out of the ear.

Use of cotton buds or objects in the ear

Using cotton buds often pushes wax deeper into the ear, making it harder to remove over time.

Wearing hearing aids or earplugs

Regular use can prevent wax from exiting the ear naturally and may also stimulate increased wax production.

Dry or hard wax

In some people, wax is less mobile and more likely to build up rather than clear naturally.

Age-related changes

As we age, wax can become drier and the natural clearing process may slow down.

How we help

Our ear wax removal service

If you suspect a wax blockage, you can attend a Lions Hearing Clinic for assessment and removal.

During your appointment, your clinician will:

  • Examine your ear canal and eardrum
  • Determine if wax is present and requires removal
  • Safely remove excess wax using appropriate clinical techniques

If the wax is too deep or impacted, we may refer you to a medical practitioner for further care.

What to expect?

Before your appointment

To make removal easier and more comfortable, we recommend using wax softening drops (available from your pharmacy) for a few days prior to your visit.

After your appointment

Many people experience immediate relief following wax removal.

If your ears still feel blocked or your hearing does not improve, it may be due to an underlying hearing loss. In this case, we recommend booking a comprehensive hearing assessment.
